Indiana suffers one of the state’s largest natural disasters on record.

During the week of May 30 through June 6, Indiana suffered one of the largest natural disasters in the state’s history. Tornadoes along with strong storms and heavy rainfall have caused over one-third of the counties in Indiana to be declared disaster areas. Initial reports are still being gathered, but over 400 residents of Indianapolis alone are without homes from the May 30th tornado, leaving over 75,000 residents without power. The situation in other areas is just as devastating as storms dumped over 10 inches of rain, putting several reservoirs and levees in jeopardy and nearly 1,200 people seeking shelter.

Governor Daniels has declared the following 41 Indiana counties as disaster areas: Adams, Bartholomew, Benton, Boone, Brown, Carroll, Dearborn, Decatur, Elkhart, Franklin, Fulton, Greene, Hancock, Henry, Huntington, Jackson, Jefferson, Jennings, Johnson, Lagrange, Lawrence, Madison, Marion, Miami, Monroe, Morgan, Newton, Ohio, Owen, Randolph, Rush, Shelby, Sullivan, Tippecanoe, Union, Vermillion, Vigo, Wabash, Warrick, Wayne and White. Daniels said, “Residential properties were destroyed and damaged by tornadoes, severe winds, rain and flash flooding. No matter how many times I see it, I'm constantly amazed and awed by the human spirit and the spirit of compassion that characterizes our state."
